A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four police officers lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
