Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments following Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
