The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Divinity

The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its new project, creating a wave of anticipation within the player base. However, subsequent statements from the studio's co-founder have added a new dimension to the narrative, addressing the team's approach toward AI tools.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a new statement, Swen Vincke detailed that the developer is using machine learning for certain ancillary tasks. These encompass enhancing PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage artistic references, and writing temporary text.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the end content in the game will be created solely by actual writers. "Our team is developing all the content manually," he said.

We are actively growing our roster of concept artists and are busily forming dedicated writer rooms.

Given that visual development is being particularly referenced — we currently have 23 concept artists and have positions available for additional creatives.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to enabling creatives to spend more time on making content.

Every ML tool used well is a boost to a artist's process, not a replacement for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The admission of AI usage at first generated concern among some the community. In reaction, Vincke issued additional clarification on public forums.

"At Larian, we employ AI tools to research ideas, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he stated. "In the initial planning process we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then replace with original illustrations."

He added, "Larian brings on talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to follow what a algorithm proposes."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past broken down the team's targeted approach to AI and ML, categorizing its use into three main areas:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of scenarios to validate concepts before complete implementation.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could in the future create innovative reactivity, especially in simulating dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He explicitly noted that key artistic areas — such as writing — are not fields where the team is replacing human involvement. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these precise roles.

"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not planning on trimming down staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
