The former Liverpool manager admits coming back to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.

The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, remarked that rejoining the club remains something that could happen. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful near-decade reign that included Champions League success and ending the club's long wait for three decades, has since taken on positions in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and providing guidance for the DFL.

Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments

They secured England's top flight last season, but many fans holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the idea that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he told Steven Bartlett: “I said I will never coach any other side in England. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”

“I’m 58, so the choice could be mine in a few years, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”

What Would Lure Him Back?

Pressed on the specific conditions would have to unfold to tempt his return to management, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “No longing for management; I avoid standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to media briefings four times, three times a week or doing numerous chats each week.

“The locker room isn't missed per se, yet sharing a meal alongside the squad enjoying conversation, is pleasant. Success was frequent thus frequently great spirits around the place. I can still hear the captain's chuckle vividly recalled to illustrate.”

Commending Arne Slot

He spoke highly regarding Arne Slot, crediting him for the adjustments which secured the championship in the previous season. The team has suffered four in a row in all competitions after a summer spending spree, though he denied the idea it could be a decline.

“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. The French striker, excellent performer. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. You don’t have to worry over the club, they will be fine.”

Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward

He shared movingly about the death of Diogo Jota, a player he signed in 2020, and the effect for the team. The forward was killed in a vehicle collision with his brother recently.

“How do you replace a person like him? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the squad absent his presence. I still cannot speak properly on this topic. A profound tragedy for his teammates also. No one within the club would cite it for poor performances though it's a fact. Being in that space which he filled completely. Dealing with that on a personal level is difficult. Unbearable.”
