The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial $34 Million Agreement.
In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Incentives
The deal includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.
The agreement provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.
Posting Fee and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to represent the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
